Attitude
It takes hard work and effort to maintain the right attitude. Norman Vincent Peale said, "Any fact facing us is not as important as our attitude toward it, for that determines our success or failure." Everyone is negative at times--that is human nature. Newspapers sell because people want to read about other people's problems. However, a negative feelings, negative attitudes, and negative words are all mental depressors. They take us down, and wear us out. Fatigue and the inability to focus on the task at hand are the result of negativity. So how do you change?
Change is not easy. It takes real work and effort. My good friend Brendan Adey who is a motivational speaker and success coach from Aberdeen, Scotland, visited me recently. Whenever we get together we exchange ideas--get each other thinking about the positive things that life has to offer. And it helps us right our attitudes. Here are some tips to help keep your attitude positive.
• Smile: Other people will notice, and a smile is contagious. Make an effort to look pleasant. Truly listen to those around you. If you are interested in them, they will be interested in you.
• Say something positive, good natured, or complimentary. Catch yourself catching someone else doing a good job. It will help you focus on the positive rather than the negative.
• Change your negative statements to positive ones. Find the good in everything. Stan Kellner plays a game called, "What's good about this", where he tries to find at least 10 things that are good in every situation.
• Motivation Matters: You will get more done by encouraging than by nagging. Zig Ziglar states, "Motivation is the spark that lights the fire of knowledge and fuels the engine of accomplishment. It maximizes and maintains momentum.
Help yourself by using words such as: Good! That's Right! Exactly! Good job! Thank You! I'm pleased with that! Great!
