Most web authors understand that the number of backlinks to their website plays a huge roll in their google SERP ranking. This is correct, but there’s more to it than just the number of backlinks, it’s more about quality than quantity. Here are 3 key points to remember when link building:
1. Anchor text - When link building, it is important to determine which keywords you are aiming to monopolize. In each backlink you receive, you need to make sure that your keyword/s are included in the anchor text of the link! For example, if you have a website where you sell fishing equipment, you would want your backlink to contain words such as ‘fishing equipment’ in the anchor text of the incoming link.
2. Page title relevance - Building backlinks with relevant anchor text is important, but as search engines evolve, it is becoming more and more important to receive backlinks from relevant websites. Placing your ‘fishing equipment’ backlink on a website which revolves around cars is not ideal, you need to aim to place your backlink on websites which revolve around fishing. Something even more powerful than this, is to get your backlink on a page, which has your keywords (fishing equipment) in the title of the external page - this plays a massive role in the SERPs.
3. Google Page Rank - I’ve mentioned before that PR is not the most important thing ever, but it does help with backlinking. Following point 1 and 2 above is vital, but to add the cherry on top, you would like to perform step 1 and 2 on a website which has a PR of 3 at the minimum. This once again works on the premise of relevance.
Following these 3 simple steps when link building, will ensure your website a better SERP ranking. You might find that only 10 backlinks following the 3 steps above, would be as powerful as 50 random backlinks from irrelevant websites.
