Tips and safety suggestions for people who are new to hiking

Hiking is a fun outdoor sport. It is very easy for beginners and not only offers good exercise but it also involves getting out and enjoying nature and the outdoors. There are a few things to consider before embarking on a hike though, and some safety precautions to take.

Firstly it is best not to hike alone. For safety reasons is best to have at least one other person with you, if not a group of people. Always let someone back home know where you and your party will be going and approximately what time you should return. This way, if you happened to go missing, they would know where to start looking for you. If you are heading out on a long hike it may be a good idea to tell a park ranger or someone similar where you are going and what route you will be taking. A mobile phone is also another beneficial accessory to the modern hiker.

If you or those you are hiking with are new to hiking it is best to start with a short, easy track. As you become more experienced you can try harder tracks and journeys. Find out as much as you can about the track or course you wish to hike. It is best to know ahead what you are in for. Will you be hiking up hill, or through water, or climbing rocks if you were to take that route? Choose a hiking trip that will match your fitness level. Don’t be ashamed to start with an easy hike, you can always try something more advanced later. It is better to be on a track that is far too easy for you than one that is far too hard.

Make sure you are wearing comfortable clothes and if it is hot these should be lightweight. If you are planning on wearing several layers of clothing because it is cooler, make sure these layers are easy to be removed if you warm up and easy to carry. Good shoes are an essential when hiking. If you were to be taking a long and strenuous hike, good hiking boots would be of great benefit. For those starting out though comfortable shoes such as sneakers or boots would do. Boots are very good as the support your ankles as you walk. Do not embark on a hike that crosses rocks or uneven or slippery surfaces without proper hiking shoes or boots.

It is best to be as prepared as possible when you go hiking. Taking plenty of water so you don’t get dehydrated is an essential. It is also a good idea to pack some snacks to keep you sustained on your trip. Other things that are good ideas to pack include a first aid kit, a map of the area and compass.

If you are just starting out hiking, it is probably best to stay on a hiking track in a national park or wherever you intend to hike. If you want more of a challenging hike you could join an experienced lead hiking group or go with an experienced person.

Never take risks hiking without the proper equipment and never go it alone. Remember that is it better to be over prepared than under prepared. Start by trying a hike that you know you can handle and as you build up experience and fitness you can progress to more advanced hiking. Hiking is about having fun and enjoying the outdoors, so get out there and enjoy yourself but always remember to play it safe!
